Canada is Processing more Spousal Immigration Applications

IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) is now processing more spousal immigration applications. The decision has come in amidst and owing to the economic slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the pandemic, the country aimed at welcoming 70,000 new immigrations under the Spouses, Partners, and Children category. However, hereafter, under the new 2021 – 2023 Immigration Levels Plan, the number will increase to 80,000 annually. Most of the individuals welcomed under this category are husbands, wives and partners of Canadian citizens, and permanent residents of the country sponsoring them.

The ongoing pandemic has significantly affected immigration applications and processing. But in late September, IRCC announced that it aims to expedite up to 6000 spousal applications every month from September to December 2020.

IRCC Spousal Sponsorship Process has Doubled!

As per insights received from IRCC, the number of spousal sponsorship applications finalized by IRCC has doubled in September 2020 compared to July. The number, which was only 2000 in July, has increased to 4000 in September 2020. There has been a considerable increase in the number of in-land and overseas applications. 

The number of in-land applications in July was 1200. However, in September 2020, the number of applications increased to approximately 2000. Overseas applications have grown even more. In July, the number was nearly 800. But in September, the number of applications grew to over 2000! IRCC’s recent announcement in favor of spousal sponsorship will further see a rise in the number of applications across the remaining part of the year.

Eligibility for Sponsoring your Husband, Wife, or Partner

Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada can sponsor their common-law partner, spouse, or conjugal partner. The sponsors must be at least 18 years old, prove that they do not get social assistance for a reason other than a disability, and prove that they can meet their partners’ fundamental monetary needs. 

Canadian citizens currently living overseas must prove that they plan to return to Canada to live with the sponsored person. A permanent resident of Canada who is not living in Canada, cannot sponsor anyone.

Spouses must be legally married to you and must be at least 18 years old. Common-law partners must be at least 18 years old and have stayed with you for at least 12 consecutive months. Conjugal partners, on the other hand, must be minimum of 18 years of age and must have been in a relationship with you for at least 12 consecutive months, living outside of Canada, and unable to live with you in their country or marry you owing to significant obstacles, for instance, the prohibition of same-sex marriages in their country.

How to Submit a Spousal Application?

IRCC asks to submit two applications at the same time. The first is the sponsorship application, and the second one is the permanent residence application. It requires only three steps to submit a spousal application.

• Step 1: Get the application package from IRCC’s website

• Step 2: Pay the application fee on IRCC’s website

• Step 3: Submit your final application to IRCC through email
